Twelve Steps with Scripture
Step 10
Continued to take personal inventory and when we were
wrong promptly admitted it.
For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is
among you, not to think [of himself] more highly than he ought to think;
but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the
measure of faith. - Romans
12:3
Mark
14:38
Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing but
the flesh is weak."
1
Thessalonians 5:17-22
Pray without ceasing. 18 In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the
will of God for you in Christ Jesus. 19 3 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not
despise prophetic utterances. 21 Test everything; retain what is good. 22 Refrain
from every kind of evil.
Hebrews
2:1-3
Therefore, we must attend all the more to what we have heard, so that we may
not be carried away. 2 For if the word announced through angels proved firm,
and every transgression and disobedience received its just recompense, 3 how
shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? Announced originally through
the Lord, it was confirmed for us by those who had heard.
Matthew
5:8
Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.
Matthew
26:71-75
As he went out to the gate, another girl saw him and said to those who were
there, "This man was with Jesus the Nazorean." 72 Again he denied it with an
oath, "I do not know the man!" 73 A little later the bystanders came over and
said to Peter, "Surely you too are one of them; even your speech gives you
away." 74 At that he began to curse and to swear, "I do not know the man." And
immediately a cock crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered the word that Jesus had
spoken: "Before the cock crows you will deny me three times." He went out and
began to weep bitterly.
Mark
14:38
Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing but
the flesh is weak."
Luke
6:41-42
be like his teacher. 41 Why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye,
but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own? 42 How can you say to your
brother, 'Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye,' when you do not
even notice the wooden beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! Remove the wooden
beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter
in your brother's eye.
Luke
14:25-35
Great crowds were traveling with him, and he turned and addressed them, 26 "If
any one comes to me without hating his father7 and mother, wife and children,
brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. 27 Whoever
does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. 28 Which
of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the
cost to see if there is enough for its completion? 29 Otherwise, after laying
the foundation and finding himself unable to finish the work the onlookers
should laugh at him 30 and say, 'This one began to build but did not have the
resources to finish.' 31 Or what king marching into battle would not first
sit down and decide whether with ten thousand troops he can successfully oppose
another king advancing upon him with twenty thousand troops? 32 But if not,
while he is still far away, he will send a delegation to ask for peace terms.
33 In the same way, everyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions
cannot be my disciple. 34 "Salt is good, but if salt itself loses its taste,
with what can its flavor be restored? 35 It is fit neither for the soil nor
for the manure pile; it is thrown out. Whoever has ears to hear ought to hear."
John
17:15-17
I do not ask that you take them out of the world but that you keep them from
the evil one. 16 They do not belong to the world any more than I belong to
the world. 17 Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth.
Romans
12:3
For by the grace given to me I tell everyone among you not to think of himself
more highly than one ought to think, but to think soberly, each according to
the measure of faith that God has apportioned.
Romans
12:16
Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us
exercise them: if prophecy, in proportion to the faith;
Romans
16:19-20
For while your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, I want
you to be wise as to what is good, and simple as to what is evil; 20 then the
God of peace will quickly crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord
Jesus be with you.
1
Corinthians 3:11-16
for no one can lay a foundation other than the one that is there, namely, Jesus
Christ. 12 If anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious
stones, wood, hay, or straw, 13 the work of each will come to light, for the
Day will disclose it. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire (itself)
will test the quality of each one's work. 14 If the work stands that someone
built upon the foundation, that person will receive a wage. 15 But if someone's
work is burned up, that one will suffer loss; the person will be saved, 8 but
only as through fire. 16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and
that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
1
Corinthians 6:12
"Everything is lawful for me," 5 but not everything is beneficial. "Everything
is lawful for me," but I will not let myself be dominated by anything.
1
Corinthians 10:6-13
These things happened as examples for us, so that we might not desire evil
things, as they did. 7 And do not become idolaters, as some of them did, as
it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to revel." 8
Let us not indulge in immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand
fell within a single day. 9 Let us not test Christ as some of them did, and
suffered death by serpents. 10 Do not grumble as some of them did, and suffered
death by the destroyer. 11 These things happened to them as an example, and
they have been written down as a warning to us, upon whom the end of the ages
has come. 12 Therefore, whoever thinks he is standing secure should take care
not to fall. 13 No trial has come to you but what is human. God is faithful
and will not let you be tried beyond your strength; but with the trial he will
also provide a way out, so that you may be able to bear it.
1
Corinthians 10:23-24
"Everything is lawful," but not everything is beneficial. 10 "Everything
is lawful," but not everything builds up. 24 No one should seek his own
advantage, but that of his neighbor.
2
Corinthians 10:17-18
Whoever boasts, should boast in the Lord." 10 18 For it is not the one who
recommends himself who is approved, 11 but the one whom the Lord recommends.
Galatians
4:9
but now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by
God, how can you turn back again to the weak and destitute elemental
powers? Do you want to be slaves to them all over again?
Ephesians
4:26-32
Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun set on your anger, 27 and do not
leave room for the devil. 28 The thief must no longer steal, but rather labor,
doing honest work with his (own) hands, so that he may have something to share
with one in need. 29 No foul language should come out of your mouths, but only
such as is good for needed edification, that it may impart grace to those who
hear. 30 And do not grieve the holy Spirit of God, with which you were sealed
for the day of redemption. 31 All bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and reviling
must be removed from you, along with all malice. 32 (And) be kind to one another,
compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ.
Ephesians
5:15-16
Watch carefully then how you live, not as foolish persons but as wise, 16 making
the most of the opportunity, because the days are evil.
Philippians
2:14-15
Do everything without grumbling or questioning, 15 that you may be blameless
and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and
perverse generation, among whom you shine like lights in the world,
Colossians
3:1-3
If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ
is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Think of what is above, not of
what is on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ
in God.
2
Thessalonians 3:3-5
But the Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil
one. 4 We are confident of you in the Lord that what we instruct you, you (both)
are doing and will continue to do. 5 May the Lord direct your hearts to the
love of God and to the endurance of Christ.
Hebrews
2
Therefore, we must attend all the more to what we have heard, so that we may
not be carried away. 2 For if the word announced through angels proved firm,
and every transgression and disobedience received its just recompense, 3 how
shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? Announced originally through
the Lord, it was confirmed for us by those who had heard. 4 God added his testimony
by signs, wonders, various acts of power, and distribution of the gifts of
the holy Spirit according to his will. 5 For it was not to angels that he subjected
the world to come, of which we are speaking. 6 Instead, someone has testified
somewhere: "What is man that you are mindful of him, or the son of man that
you care for him? 7 You made him for a little while lower than the angels;
you crowned him with glory and honor, 8 subjecting all things under his feet." In "subjecting" all
things (to him), he left nothing not "subject to him." Yet at present we do
not see "all things subject to him," 9 but we do see Jesus "crowned with glory
and honor" because he suffered death, he who "for a little while" was made "lower
than the angels," that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and through whom all things exist,
in bringing many children to glory, should make the leader to their salvation
perfect through suffering. 11 He who consecrates and those who are being consecrated
all have one origin. Therefore, he is not ashamed to call them "brothers," 12
saying: "I will proclaim your name to my brothers, in the midst of the assembly
I will praise you"; 13 and again: "I will put my trust in him"; and again: "Behold,
I and the children God has given me." 14 Now since the children share in blood
and flesh, he likewise shared in them, that through death he might destroy
the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and free those who
through fear of death had been subject to slavery all their life. 16 Surely
he did not help angels but rather the descendants of Abraham; 17 therefore,
he had to become like his brothers in every way, that he might be a merciful
and faithful high priest before God to expiate the sins of the people. 18 Because
he himself was tested through what he suffered, he is able to help those who
are being tested.
1
Timothy 2:4-7
who wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth. 5 For
there is one God. There is also one mediator between God and the human race,
Christ Jesus, himself human, 6 who gave himself as ransom for all. This was
the testimony at the proper time. 7 For this I was appointed preacher and apostle
(I am speaking the truth, I am not lying), teacher of the Gentiles in faith
and truth.
2
Timothy 2: 20-26
In a large household there are vessels not only of gold and silver but also
of wood and clay, some for lofty and others for humble use. 21 If anyone cleanses
himself of these things, he will be a vessel for lofty use, dedicated, beneficial
to the master of the house, ready for every good work. 22 So turn from youthful
desires and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who
call on the Lord 5 with purity of heart. 23 Avoid foolish and ignorant debates,
for you know that they breed quarrels. 24 A slave of the Lord should not quarrel,
but should be gentle with everyone, able to teach, tolerant, 25 correcting
opponents with kindness. It may be that God will grant them repentance that
leads to knowledge of the truth, 26 and that they may return to their senses
out of the devil's snare, where they are entrapped by him, for his will.
Hebrews
3:7-13
Therefore, as the holy Spirit says: "Oh, that today you would hear his voice,
8 'Harden not your hearts as at the rebellion in the day of testing in the
desert, 9 where your ancestors tested and tried me and saw my works 10 for
forty years. Because of this I was provoked with that generation and I said, "They
have always been of erring heart, and they do not know my ways." 11 As I swore
in my wrath, "They shall not enter into my rest."'" 12 Take care, brothers,
that none of you may have an evil and unfaithful heart, so as to forsake the
living God. 13 Encourage yourselves daily while it is still "today," so that
none of you may grow hardened by the deceit of sin.
Hebrews
10:35-38
Therefore, do not throw away your confidence; it will have great
recompense. 36 You need endurance to do the will of God and receive what
he has promised. 37 "For, after just a brief moment, 17he who is to come
shall come; he shall not delay. 38 But my just one shall live by faith,
and if he draws back I take no pleasure in him."
Hebrews
12:25
See that you do not reject the one who speaks. For if they did not escape when
they refused the one who warned them on earth, how much more in our case if
we turn away from the one who warns from heaven.
Hebrews
12:28
Therefore, we who are receiving the unshakable kingdom should have gratitude,
with which we should offer worship pleasing to God in reverence and awe.
James
1:13-14
No one experiencing temptation should say, "I am being tempted by God"; for
God is not subject to temptation to evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14
Rather, each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.
James
1:19
Know this, my dear brothers: everyone should be quick to hear, slow to speak,
slow to wrath,
1
Peter 2:11
Beloved, I urge you as aliens and sojourners to keep away from worldly desires
that wage war against the soul.
2
Peter 3:17-18
Therefore, beloved, since you are forewarned, be on your guard not to be led
into the error of the unprincipled and to fall from your own stability. 18
But grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ.
To him be glory now and to the day of eternity. (Amen.)
1
John 2:3
He is expiation for our sins, and not for our sins only but for those of the
whole world. 3 The way we may be sure 2 that we know him is to keep his command
ments.
1
John 2:15-17
Do not love the world or the things of the world. If anyone loves the world,
the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, sensual
lust, 8 enticement for the eyes, and a pretentious life, is not from the Father
but is from the world. 17 Yet the world and its enticement are passing away.
But whoever does the will of God remains forever.

John 8
The Presbyter to the chosen Lady and to her children whom I love in truth--and
not only I but also all who know the truth-- 2 because of the truth that dwells
in us and will be with us forever. 3 Grace, mercy, and peace 2 will be with
us from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father's Son in truth and
love. 4 I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children 3walking in the truth
just as we were commanded by the Father. 5 But now, Lady, I ask you, not as
though I were writing a new commandment but the one we have had from the beginning:
let us love one another. 6 For this is love, that we walk according to his
commandments; this is the commandment, as you heard from the beginning, in
which you should walk. 7 Many deceivers have gone out into the world, those
who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh; such is the deceitful
one and the antichrist. 8 Look to yourselves that you 6do not lose what we
worked for but may receive a full recompense. 9 Anyone who is so "progressive" as
not to remain in the teaching of the Christ does not have God; whoever remains
in the teaching has the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does
not bring this doctrine, do not receive him in your house or even greet him;
11 for whoever greets him shares in his evil works. 12 Although I have much
to write to you, I do not intend to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to visit
you and to speak face to face so that our joy may be complete. 13 The children
of your chosen sister 10 send you greetings.
Psalm
24:3-5
Who may go up the mountain of the LORD? Who can stand in his holy place? 4 "The
clean of hand and pure of heart, who are not devoted to idols, who have not
sworn falsely. 5 They will receive blessings from the LORD, and justice from
their saving God.
Psalm
68:5-6
Sing to God, praise the divine name; exalt the rider of the clouds. Rejoice
before this God whose name is the LORD. 6 Father of the fatherless, defender
of widows-- this is the God whose abode is holy,
Psalm
85:8-9
Show us, LORD, your love; grant us your salvation. 9 I will listen for the
word of God; surely the LORD will proclaim peace To his people, to the faithful,
to those who trust in him.
Psalm
101:2-4
I follow the way of integrity; when will you come to me? I act with integrity
of heart within my royal court. 3 I do not allow into my presence anyone who
speaks perversely. Whoever acts shamefully I hate; no such person can be my
friend. 4 I shun the devious of heart; the wicked I do not tolerate.
Psalm
103:8-18
Merciful and gracious is the LORD, slow to anger, abounding in kindness. 9
God does not always rebuke, nurses no lasting anger, 10 Has not dealt with
us as our sins merit, nor requited us as our deeds deserve. 11 As the heavens
tower over the earth, so God's love towers over the faithful. 12 As far as
the east is from the west, so far have our sins been removed from us. 13 As
a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on the
faithful. 14 For he knows how we are formed, remembers that we are dust. 15
Our days are like the grass; like flowers of the field we blossom. 16 The wind
sweeps over us and we are gone; our place knows us no more. 17 But the LORD'S
kindness is forever, toward the faithful from age to age. He favors the children's
children 18 of those who keep his covenant, who take care to fulfill its precepts.
Proverbs
12:1
He who loves correction loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof
is stupid.
