Twelve Steps with Scripture
Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects
Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to
the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation
of Jesus Christ; As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according
to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as he which hath called
you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it
is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly: immorality, impurity,
passion, evil desire, and the greed that is idolatry. 3 6 Because of these
the wrath of God 4 is coming (upon the disobedient). 7 By these you too once
conducted yourselves, when you lived in that way. 8 But now you must put them
all away: 5 anger, fury, malice, slander, and obscene language out of your
This is the will of God, your holiness: that you refrain from immorality, 4
that each of you know how to acquire a wife for himself in holiness and honor,
5 not in lustful passion as do the Gentiles who do not know God; 6 not to take
advantage of or exploit a brother in this matter, forthe Lord is an avenger
in all these things, as we told you before and solemnly affirmed. 7 For God
did not call us to impurity but to holiness. 8 Therefore, whoever disregards
this, disregards not a human being but God, who (also) gives his holy Spirit
For the grace of God has appeared, saving all 12 and training us to reject
godless ways and worldly desires and to live temperately, justly, and devoutly
in this age, 13 as we await the blessed hope, the appearance 3 of the glory
of the great God and of our savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us
to deliver us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people as his
own, eager to do what is good.
Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance.
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, 4 for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
"Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a
wise man who built his house on rock. 25 The rain fell, the floods came, and
the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been set
solidly on rock. 26 And everyone who listens to these words of mine but does
not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on sand. 27 The rain
fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. And it collapsed
and was completely ruined."
What then shall we say? Shall we persist in sin that grace may abound? Of course
not! 2 How can we who died to sin yet live in it? 3 Or are you unaware that
we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were
indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ
was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness
Consequently, you too must think of yourselves as (being) dead to sin and living
for God in Christ Jesus. 12 2 Therefore, sin must not reign over your mortal
bodies so that you obey their desires.
Do not be conquered by evil but conquer evil with good.
But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
So whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away;
behold, new things have come.
I rejoice now, not because you were saddened, but because you were saddened
into repentance; for you were saddened in a godly way, so that you did not
suffer loss in anything because of us. 10 For godly sorrow produces a salutary
repentance without regret, but worldly sorrow produces death.
I say, then: live by the Spirit and you will certainly not gratify the desire
of the flesh. 13 17 For the flesh has desires against the Spirit, and the Spirit
against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you may not do
what you want.
So I declare and testify in the Lord that you must no longer live as the Gentiles
do, in the futility of their minds; 18 darkened in understanding, alienated
from the life of God because of their ignorance, because of their hardness
of heart, 19 they have become callous and have handed themselves over to licentiousness
for the practice of every kind of impurity to excess. 20 That is not how you
learned Christ, 21 assuming that you have heard of him and were taught in him,
as truth is in Jesus, 22 that you should put away the old self of your former
way of life, corrupted through deceitful desires, 23 and be renewed in the
spirit of your minds, 24 and put on 9 the new self, created in God's way in
righteousness and holiness of truth. 25
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children
of light, 9 for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and
truth. 10 Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.
I have the strength for everything through him who empowers me.
We earnestly desire each of you to demonstrate the same eagerness for the fulfillment
of hope until the end, 12 so that you may not become sluggish, but imitators
of those who, through faith and patience, are inheriting the promises.
But if any of you lacks wisdom, 4 he should ask God who gives to all generously
and ungrudgingly, and he will be given it. 6 But he should ask in faith, not
doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and
tossed about by the wind.
Therefore, put away all filth and evil excess and humbly welcome the word that
has been planted in you and is able to save your souls.
Rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, insincerity, envy, and all slander;
2 like newborn infants, long for pure spiritual milk so that through it you
may grow into salvation,
And now, children, remain in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence
and not be put to shame by him at his coming. 29 If you consider that he is
righteous, you also know that everyone who acts in righteousness is begotten
3:1 See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called
the children of God. Yet so we are. The reason the world does not know
us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God's children now;
what we shall be has not yet been revealed. We do know that when it is
revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3 Everyone
who has this hope based on him makes himself pure, as he is pure.
There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear because fear has
to do with punishment, and so one who fears is not yet perfect in love.
Those whom I love, I reprove and chastise. Be earnest, therefore, and repent.
20 " '"Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and
opens the door, (then) I will enter his house and dine with him, and he with
Know that the LORD works wonders for the faithful; the LORD hears when I call
out. 5 3 Tremble and do not sin; upon your beds ponder in silence.
I bless the LORD who counsels me; even at night my heart exhorts me. 8 I keep
the LORD always before me; with the Lord at my right, I shall never be shaken.
9 Therefore my heart is glad, my soul rejoices; my body also dwells secure,
10 5 For you will not abandon me to Sheol, nor let your faithful servant see
the pit. 11 You will show me the path to life, abounding joy in your presence,
the delights at your right hand forever.
By them your servant is instructed; obeying them brings much reward. 13 Who
can detect heedless failings? Cleanse me from my unknown faults.
Do not be senseless like horses or mules; with bit and bridle their temper
is curbed, else they will not come to you. 10 Many are the sorrows of the wicked,
but love surrounds those who trust in the LORD. 11 Be glad in the LORD and
rejoice, you just; exult, all you upright of heart.
Happy those whom you guide, LORD, whom you teach by your instruction.
13 You give them rest from evil days, while a pit is being dug for the
With all my heart I seek you; do not let me stray from your commands. 11 In
my heart I treasure your promise, that I may not sin against you. 12 Blessed
are you, O LORD; teach me your laws.
I weep in bitter pain; in accord with your word to strengthen me. 29 Lead me
from the way of deceit; favor me with your teaching. 30 The way of loyalty
I have chosen; I have set your edicts before me. 31 I cling to your decrees,
LORD; do not let me come to shame. 32 I will run the way of your commands,
for you open my docile heart. 33 LORD, teach me the way of your laws; I shall
observe them with care. 34 Give me insight to observe your teaching, to keep
it with all my heart. 35 Lead me in the path of your commands, for that is
my delight. 36 Direct my heart toward your decrees and away from unjust gain.
37 Avert my eyes from what is worthless; by your way give me life. 38 For your
servant fulfill your promise made to those who fear you. 39 Turn away from
me the taunts I dread, for your edicts bring good. 40 See how I long for your
precepts; in your justice give me life.
Probe me, God, know my heart; try me, know my concerns. 24 See if my way is
crooked, then lead me in the ancient paths.
Set a guard, LORD, before my mouth, a gatekeeper at my lips. 4 Do not let my
heart incline to evil, or yield to any sin. I will never feast upon the fine
food of evildoers.
The discipline of the LORD, my son, disdain not; spurn not his reproof; 12
For whom the LORD loves he reproves, and he chastises the son he favors.
A single reprimand does more for a man of intelligence than a hundred lashes
for a fool.
